JSC "Nagļi" history
From an idea to one of the largest carp farms in the Baltics
The construction of the first fish ponds in Nagļi began in 1965, marking the beginning of a significant fisheries project in the Lubāns lake territory.
On June 25, 1968, by a decision of the Latvian Council of Ministers, the Soviet fishery “Nagļi” was officially founded, which became one of the most strategically important freshwater fish farming farms in Latvia.
In the 1970s and 1980s, rapid infrastructure development took place. Along with the expansion of the pond system, a fish incubation workshop, mechanical workshops, a boiler house, and fish wintering buildings were built. A full-fledged and technically equipped farm was created, which allowed for full-cycle fish farming.
Development and change
Over the course of its more than 50 years of existence, the fishery has undergone several structural and name changes, adapting to economic and political changes in the country.
In 2000, the fishery was privatized, and since then it has been operating as JSC "Nagļi". Privatization marked a new stage of development - with targeted modernization, strengthening of professional management, and a long-term development strategy.
The largest full-cycle fish farm in Latvia and the Baltics
Today, JSC “Nagļi” is the largest full-cycle fish farm not only in Latvia, but in the entire Baltics. The company has its own carp and pike breeding material, fish incubation is carried out, fish fry are raised and market fish farming is ensured. A full-cycle approach allows quality control at all stages of production and ensures stable, sustainable development.
Nature as an inalienable value
All fishing ponds are located in a specially protected “Natura 2000” area, which confirms the unique importance of nature in this region. Nagļi fish ponds are one of the richest and most diverse waterfowl nesting and migratory bird resting places in Latvia. This means that fishing activities are carried out in close balance with the principles of nature protection, combining economic activity with environmental responsibility.
